Knox County Jail Roster

The Knox County, Tennessee inmate registry is a public resource that allows anyone to check if a specific person is in custody at the county detention facility. KnoxCourt.us helps find public information about current and recent inmates of the county. Additionally, data can be obtained through the official website of the Knox County Sheriff's Office, by visiting the detention facility in person, or by calling the institution. The registry enables the public to verify a person's custody status, view charges filed, and learn the booking date. The Knox County Sheriff's Office Corrections Division maintains this registry and updates it regularly throughout the day.

Search Current Inmates in Knox Jail

There are several ways to find information about current Knox County inmates.

Online Search

  1. Visit the current inmate population page on the Knox County Sheriff's Office website. This tool shows all individuals currently in custody.
  2. To see arrests from the last 24 hours, use the 24-hour arrest list.
  3. Enter the person's full legal first and last name. If you know the booking number, it can also be used.
  4. Review the results — the registry will show charges, booking date, and other details.

Additionally, KnoxCourt.us provides the ability to search publicly available court information related to county inmates.

What You Need for a Search

  • Full legal name (last name required, first name preferred)
  • Booking number, if known

Find Knox Jail Booking Records Online

A booking record is created each time a person is brought to the detention facility and officially processed. This process records key details about the detention.

Each record typically includes:

  • Unique booking number
  • Date and time of processing
  • List of charges filed
  • Name of the agency that made the arrest (Sheriff's Office, Knoxville Police, etc.)
  • Basic identification details of the detainee

Booking records are available online through the inmate population registry and the 24-hour arrest list. Both resources are maintained by the Knox County Sheriff's Office. It is worth noting that the city of Knoxville has its own police department, independent of the Sheriff's Office, but all arrested within the county are taken to the single county detention facility.

If you need more detailed information than what is in the registry — such as a full arrest report or a copy of the record — submit a request through the Knox County Public Records Portal. For a criminal history check, the Criminal Court Clerk's Office offers a local search package for $15.00.

Search the Knox Jail Roster by Last Name or Booking Number

The inmate registry on the Sheriff's Office website supports two primary search methods.

Search by Last Name

This is the most common method. Enter the person's last name in the search field. Adding the first name will narrow the results, which is helpful with common last names. A few practical tips:

  • Check the spelling — even one mistake can lead to no results
  • Try different spellings if the last name has alternative forms
  • If the page displays a full list without a search field, use the browser's Ctrl+F function (or Cmd+F on Mac) to find the desired name on the page

Search by Booking Number

The booking number is a unique identifier assigned during processing. It provides an exact result without the risk of confusion with namesakes.

If the Search Yields No Results

The absence of a name in the registry does not necessarily mean the person was not detained. Possible reasons:

  • The person has already been released — the registry only shows those currently in custody
  • The processing is not yet complete, and the data has not been entered into the system
  • The name was entered incorrectly or in a different format

In such a case, call the detention facility directly at 865-281-2468 or check the court case search of the Criminal Court Clerk's Office for information on court proceedings.

Jail Roster Updates and Search Limitations in Knox

The Knox County Sheriff's Office updates the online registry throughout the day. Data changes as new detainees are processed and released individuals are removed from the list. However, there may be a delay between the actual arrest and the appearance of the record in the system — sometimes several hours.

Main limitations to be aware of:

  • Processing delay. After being brought to the detention facility, the registration process (fingerprinting, photographing, data entry) takes time. During this period, the name does not appear in the registry.
  • Disappearance of records after release. Once a person is released — on bail, by court decision, or after serving time — their name disappears from the current registry. This list is not an archive of all past detentions.
  • Only current custody. The registry only displays individuals who are in custody at the time of viewing.

For historical arrest records or court case searches, use the Knox County Criminal Court Clerk's Office or submit an official public records request. If the person has been transferred to a state facility, information can be checked through the Tennessee Felony Offender Information Lookup.
